Home Remedies for Dry Skin & Itching

There are a variety of reasons that skin can turn dry and itchy. Dry air, overexposure to the sun, chemicals in your bath water, allergic reactions, or just plain irritated skin are some of the causes. The worst part of this condition is that it is dry, flaky and itchy. The best solution is to keep the skin hydrated. Replenishing the moisture in the skin will help relieve dry, itchy skin

Whipped Cream Remedy
This is not where the whipped cream in the spray can gets pulled out of the refrigerator. This is the old fashioned, good-for-the-skin whipping cream. Cream contains proteins and lactic acids. This helps soften and nourish the skin. Beat 1 cup of heavy cream with an electric mixer until soft peeks form. This creates a bowl of soft and fluffy whipped cream that is not full of sugar. Slather the cream onto the skin and massage it in. Let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes before rinsing off in a warm bath or shower.

Body Scrub
This is a moisturizing body scrub that improves circulation and removes dry, flaky skin. Mix 1/4 cup granulated sugar, 2 tbsp. vegetable oil, and 2 tbsp. whole milk into a smooth, creamy texture. Before bathing, massage the mixture all over the body. Rinse off with warm water. Save any extra in the refrigerator and discard the mixture if the milk sours.

Fruit-Tea Freshener
The tea aisle in the grocery store is full of caffeine-free fruit tea--cranberry, raspberry, mango, peach and kiwi-strawberry. The key to this freshener is to pick a caffeine-free variety of tea. Steep two fruit tea bags in 1 cup of boiling water until the water has cooled. Add 1 tbsp. of witch hazel. If there are bits of tea floating in the mixture, then strain the liquid through a coffee filter. Put it in a labeled bottle and store in the refrigerator. Either use a cotton ball to apply the freshener to dry, itchy areas or put it into a spray bottle to spritz onto the skin.

Moisturizer
Look in the pharmacy or health food store for solid cocoa butter and beeswax. Combine 1/4 cup grated cocoa butter, 2 tbsp. sesame oil, 1 tbsp. avocado oil, and 1 tbsp. grated beeswax in a glass bowl. Place the bowl in a water bath and microwave until the solids melt. Pour it into a clean glass jar and cool. Once the mixture is cool, stir it. Apply this moisturizer anywhere you need extra moisture or an itchy area.
